NEWPORT WAY NORTHWEST (BETWEEN 54TH AND STATE ROUTE 900)
- A Parkway not a high speed corridor
- Center Turn Lane
- A Roundabout
- Bike lanes on both sides of the street
- Cost $7 million.
The second road project on our local Prop #1 is focused along Newport Way Northwest between Southeast 54th Street and State Route 900. Newport Way traditionally has been a fast road built for country driving speeds, but with more than 500 new housing units being built there, the speed needs to come down. To do that, the City plans to turn Newport Road along this area into a beautiful parkway,
With a proposed center turn lane, the improvement would allow turning vehicles at some spots and landscaping at others. There would be much-needed bike lanes on both sides of Newport Road and a sidewalk on the south side. A shared-used path on the north side is envisioned that would be part of the Mountains to Sound Greenway trail.
Safety improvements and other ways to control traffic are in the works, but the specifics will wait until future development along the road suggests what best fits the future uses. Gateway Apartments developers have committed to installing a roundabout at Northwest Pacific Elm Drive. Making the intersection frustrating right now, the road has a sidewalk on the north side of the street, bike lanes on either side but no center turn lane.
